Dancing Between “Knows” and “No’s”

One of the most important things we teach in dance class has nothing to do with steps.
It’s learning how to listen.
Every dancer’s body communicates clearly once we know how to pay attention. How to recognize the difference between a Know and a No:
a “know” says: “This feels hard, unfamiliar, or stretchy… and I’m ready to try”
a true “no” says: “This doesn’t work for how my body moves right now.”
In our private sessions, we are deeply attuned to that difference.
When it’s a know, we gently support the dancer through the challenge. We help them stretch with confidence instead of force.
When it’s a no, we don’t push. We pivot. We adjust. We find a new pathway that fits their body and expression.
That’s where real confidence is built.
Not by overriding the body. But by learning when to stay and grow and when to change course.
These moments are my favorite part of dance classes, especially private sessions. They are personal, powerful, and deeply self-loving. The dancer isn’t just learning choreography. They’re learning self-trust.
And even if you never enter our dance classroom, take this with you:
Notice in your own body.Is this a heck no?
Or is this a know that says, “This feels new… and I’m ready.”
That awareness changes everything.
